Quote: UK government stands by its pledge on income tax, minister says
Britain's ruling Labour Party remains committed to its pre-election tax pledges, including on income tax, minister Nick Thomas-Symonds told Sky News on Friday, ahead of next month's budget.
Reeves and Prime Minister Keir Starmer told voters before last year's election that they would not raise the rates of social security contributions, value added tax (VAT) or income tax on what they called "working people".
The Guardian on Thursday reported that finance minister Rachel Reeves was considering raising income tax in the budget to help close a multibillion-pound deficit.
"We stand by our manifesto pledges on VAT, on national insurance and on income tax," Thomas-Symonds said when asked about the Guardian report.
In her first budget last year, Reeves increased the rate of social security contributions, or National Insurance Contributions, paid by employers but said she remained committed to not raising the tax burden on working people.
The Guardian said officials were weighing options including an increase in the basic rate of income tax or changes to thresholds, though no final decision has been made.
Earlier this month, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said that Reeves should break her promise on income tax rather than attempt to raise the £30 billion ($40.26 billion) in revenue she is expected to need in more economically damaging ways. It's looking more likely we'll be paying even more tax in a couple of weeks: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8g6kdgzelo

There are plenty of ways that taxation could be lowered, but these morons won't do them, because they would undermine their imbecilic policies and those supporting them. - Turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

Labout have only proved that rock bottom has a beasement. It's a shame Sunack didn't become PM sooner - at least he gave the impression of a steady pair of hands.

Look on the bright side, Lex. This will be the last Labour government for a generation. Mind you, I dread to think how much more damage they'll do until they're forced from office!

I must say, I quite like Farage and he has held a real job down and understands money, etc..
I suspect that what he'll need to do is draw in outside expertise to form a government. Of course, he might decide to stand down in favour of Zia?

He might be ok if he actually came up with some thought out policies. As far as I can tell, he just seems to come out with whatever gets him attention.

To be fair, Lex, we're far enough away from an election that any detail now would be meaningless, as it'd have to be changed beforehand.
I see nothing wrong (at this stage) with him floating 'loose' policy ideas, but recognising they will need to be firmed up before the election.
All that said, a 'snap' election might catch Reform on the hop.

I believe there's a petition on the government website demanding that Reeves is forced to sit a maths O-level.
Might be an interesting parliamentary debate!
