My husband is looking for a publisher for his book, titled. SLAVE STATE . It is aimed at the general reader. About how we are living effectively in a state of slavery that even the ancient world which knew slavery well, would have been horrified by how liberty of expression is being closed down.

No, we want to avoid that avenue at the moment. We used self publishing before and it was a hell of a job getting them to do what we want and they are expensive, I think some of them are just sharks. They didn't number the pages rights , and they had a funny way of starting a new chapter, halfway down the page. also doing amendments was a night mare. All in all it was not that satisfactory. He put up his charges too.

Have you tried self publishing via Amazon?

Failing that, I think I might be looking at the smaller publishers such as Pen and Sword. Possibly consider publishers that produce 'conspiracy theory' type of books. Who publishes David Ike?

I will add here that I agree with the basic premise of the book, but many mainstream publishers will run a mile. Possibly look towards the States?

I buy The Writers and Artists Yearbook which is the bible for writers.
I've had books (3) published by Amazon with which I was happy-always hoping some other publisher see it and pick it up and run with it..I dream on. but I know it happens.--Better than keeping it in a drawer.
My next two-half finished, I shall try to get an agent which is the hard bit. But read the year book-or get it from the library.

Re your book. I'd be interested so let me know when it happens.I did two courses in Oxford on Slavery in Britain --through the ages to present day--well to 2010 but it is more relevant now.

The internet is opening up some exciting possibilities for publishing, the only drawback of course being many sites may well be interested in what you are writing run on a more or less voluntary basis and can't pay for content. There is a very uneasy relationship between ink on paper industry and the internet and it is difficult to know where to place material between the two . The internet is a window for everyone which is a good thing but the down side is you are looking at countless thousands of windows! I personally prefer ink on paper, at the end of the day, who want's to read, War & Peace on the internet.

Amazon has not been a bad platform for me, but it does require managing.

These days, even if you do manage to gain an agent (difficult) any publishing contract will usually expect you to put a lot of groundwork in marketing the book yourself. Sometimes it's better (and easier) to self publish (Lulu POD?) and ask local book sellers to take a few of your books on sale or return. There are plenty of independent bookshops locally, and don't forget the museums etc.

The best way I found to shift books, was to offer them at the end of my talks/lectures.

Thank you for your thoughtful suggestions, Rebbonk. The lecture idea seems appealing too. A youtube lecture might be good, but we aren't clever enough for the know how.

I can't help with youtube as I've never used it. But physical talks/lectures were always good for a few sales.

It might be possible for your husband to guest lecture at a few of the local universities/colleges and offer the book at the end of the session. Various deals are available with these people, he might even negotiate a fee for the lecture: he might also have to hand over some of his book sales. Perhaps talk to the humanities department (or whatever they call themselves nowadays)?

I also found that learned societies were always struggling for guest speakers. They rarely paid more than expenses (and a meal if I was lucky) but again, a few copies of my books would sell.

I think it's just a case of being creative who you contact to see what their interest is? (I was lucky, my field was business so there were plenty of openings and plenty of demand). Possibly your husband might find the more left-wing associations/societies amenable?
