As a much younger chap, I often used to go on car cruises with local custom car clubs. The difference was, we behaved ourselves and didn't use the public roads as race tracks: we'd use Avon Park or Santa Pod if we wanted to race.
Sadly, those involved today only have themselves to blame.

Get this...... There is a policeman's son in our street who has one of those cars that has had a noisy exhaust put on it, and we know that this lad meets up with other racer twits in Stratford. We have complained over the years about him reving up and down the street when he goes to and fro, but we have now given up. The lad said he will try and be quiet when passing our house, but I think he has a short memory span. We try to keep on friendly terms with his dad the cop, but it is a strained effort.
I can never for the life of me understand the obsession with noise and speed. As the saying goes, empty barrels make most noise.

Noisy exhausts are a menace. They upset the neighbours, everyone knows when you're coming and going. There's no need for them and they can be an MOT failure. But the real problem with noisy exhausts is that they are very wearing for the driver. Try driving a couple of hundred miles with one!
I love the sound of a large engine, especially the big Vs, but they need silencing. My own car has a large engine, but it burbles rather than roars.
And as someone who suffers from tinnitus, I can tell you that it's no fun. Sadly, few realise the damage noise does to their hearing until it's too late.
