My Granddad was killed on a zebra crossing by a speeding driver (1973-ish). The judge let the driver off with a ban and no further punishment. Granddad's injuries were so bad that the judge asked my mum to leave the courtroom whilst they were read out!

In his summing up, the judge said that my granddad was an old man and was well over normal life expectancy, anyway! - Nice! IIRC an ex-WW1 soldiers' association (Old Contemptibles?) wanted to appeal the sentence, but mum wouldn't have it.

But it's not the perpetrator's fault - he/she/they/it is just a victim of circumstance!
