What I, and a lot of people I've talked to, find incredible is that he walked off with less than year to his parole hearing - when he might or might not be released - and condemned himself to several extra years in jail.

Unless that was his intention - he has become institutionalized and escaped to stay in prison?

That's quite possibly the case Lex, as you say he has become so institutionalized and can't cope out of jail, he most probably knows he will have a hard time out of jail than in where he has everything provided for him.
