Does anyone know the facts of this case? All I really know was that Lorraine Anne MACK was murdered by her pensioner husband, who stabbed her repeatedly. I think he handed himself in and has since been committed to mental health care.

What happened?

An 80-year-old Ullenhall man charged with murder appeared before Coventry Crown Court on January 3rd 2007

Kenneth Alexander Mack, of Gentleman's Lane, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on March 14, charged with the murder of Lorraine Anne Mack, 51, also of Gentleman's Lane, Ullenhall.

Mrs Mack's body was found by police officers at her home on Wednesday, December 13.

The most comprehensive story on the circumstances so far is this one:

A retired industrialist accused of murdering his wife in a frenzied stabbing at their isolated £2 million home may be moved from prison to a secure psychiatric hospital.

Eighty-year-old Kenneth Mack appeared at Coventry Crown Court for a preliminary hearing after being charged with the murder of his 51-year-old wife Lorraine.

Grey-haired Mack, wearing a double-breasted blazer with a folded handkerchief in the top pocket, stood slightly stooped in the dock as he was addressed by the court clerk.

The millionaire retired industrialist spoke only to confirm his address at Mockley Close, Gentleman’s Lane, Ullenhall, near Henley, where he lived with his late wife but which had been put on the market last year.

Vicki Lofrese, prosecuting, told the court it was alleged that Mack had murdered his wife of 23 years in the kitchen of their home ‘on a day prior to December 13 last year.’ Miss Lofrese told the court: “The police were notified of this by the defendant at about 12.45 pm on December 13.Police officers visited the home and found the deceased in the kitchen, covered with a sheet.”

It is alleged that Lorraine Mack had been stabbed about 50 times in a frenzied attack the previous evening, and that in the morning Mack had visited his dentist before returning and only then calling the police.

Miss Lofrese said: “Mr Mack was arrested and taken to the police station where he was interviewed, and during the interview he said he acted in self-defence when his wife came towards him with a knife.”

She asked for the case to be adjourned for the prosecution papers to be served on the defence late next month, prior to a plea and case management hearing in March. James Mulholland, defending, agreed with the proposed timetable, and said that at the moment the defence lawyers ‘are instructed privately, not under a legal aid order.’

Judge Richard Cole said the question of legal aid for Mack would be dealt with in chambers, rather than in open court. There was no application for bail, but Mr Mulholland added: “There is likely to be a bail application in due course for him to be transferred from the prison to a secure hospital unit.” Adjourning the case until the plea and case management hearing and remanding Mack in custody, the Judge pointed out: “The venue will depend on the directions of the Presiding Judge of the circuit.”

Mr Mack was due to stand trial at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, Feb 25. The case has now been adjourned because the defence counsel are unavailable due to another trial over-running. It will proceed shortly.
