I've known several family members and friends succumb to various degenerative conditions over the years, and it still breaks my heart to think of them in the state they were in, even though their suffering has come to an end.

There are some really wicked diseases about.
A friend of mine has Parkinson's and it seems to be progressing at an incredibly rapid rate.
Mrs Rebbonk has Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) and was given a very poor prognosis some years back. Thankfully, that prognosis has proven to be largely incorrect, but she's still deteriorating and will suffer dreadfully with the onset of winter.
As you point out Lex, it really isn't nice seeing those around you decline in health.
