I have felt for several years now that the real reason for stigmatising smokers is to encourage people to exist longer - not live longer. If we can get more people to require long term care, then many of them will have to give up their homes to pay for it. This, in turn, means that their children will be prevented from benefitting from their parents' assets and will be kept in debt.
People in debt are easier to control.
And the filthy rich can carry on making even more money.
