Planning permission refused for works at former butcher’s shop in Old Arley

The Council’s Planning and Development Board refused planning permission at its meeting on 9th June 2025.

The Borough Council’s Planning and Development Board refused planning permission at its meeting on the 9th of June for the retention of a number of buildings and site engineering works at the former Rowley’s Butcher’s shop in Old Arley.

The Board considered that these works had directly led to a substantial increase in the number of animals being slaughtered there over a significant period of time.

That increase had resulted in significantly harmful highway and amenity consequences on residents, as well as on the wider setting of the village. The Board heard about these consequences from residents who spoke at the meeting and from the content of over 1000 letters and emails that had been received.

Councillor Martin Watson, Vice Chair of the Planning and Development Board said:

“The consequences of the substantially increased activity at this former small butcher’s shop brought about by these works have been felt on a 24-hour basis by the residents over the last twelve months. They have organised themselves and submitted lots of evidence to support their case. The Board has looked at all of this and was satisfied that it was able to agree to the refusal”.
