Same with me - I tend to park a short distance from the town centre, and parking rarely seems to be a problem.

As a visitor to these places I rarely have trouble parking. However, I don't mind a small walk. It can be very different if you live there.
As regards parking on pavements, I'd make that a criminal offence (the current law is murky and poorly enforced).
